Here at Isla Canela next Saturday September 22 a new edition of the International Canoeing Regatta of the Guadiana River will be held . It is expected that  more than 200 canoeists from clubs throughout Andalusia and Extremadura and the Portuguese Algarve and Alentejo. Every year Ayamonte promotes local restaurants through the tapas route. Foodies flock to this month long tapas festival shared between Isla Canela, Punta del Moral and Ayamonte. This is a truly unusual ceremony which takes place in Ayamonte on Ash Wednesday it is called El Entierro de la Sardina which literally means the burial of the sardine. A large number of people get together to observe a centuries old annual tradition of burying a dead fish or the likeness of one. This is so unusual that it is hard to explain. It is not so beautiful or so exciting that you can’t miss it, but if you go to see it, you spend time scratching your head in wonder at the  British mindset of the 1800s. The ferry service between Spain and Portugal which transports vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles and passengers on the boats along the Guadiana River to the Portuguese town of Vila Real de Santo Antonio.
